10 years for woman who sliced civil servant's throat and pleaded insanity

Summary

A 36‑year‑old woman, Laura Kenna, was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment, with the last five years suspended, for attempting to murder civil servant Fionnuala Burke on Lower Drumcondra Road on 3 January 2017. Kenna, who had no fixed abode, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, a plea rejected by a Central Criminal Court jury on 5 March. The jury heard that Kenna attacked Burke, who was walking home from work, by pushing her onto a grassy area and stabbing her. Burke suffered a deep slash across her neck that penetrated muscle and the thyroid gland, requiring surgery and intensive care. Kenna later admitted to the Gardaí that she had "sliced her like you would a goat." Justice Tara Burns, after considering Kenna's mental health history and admissions, imposed a 15‑year term, suspending the final five years on the condition that Kenna comply with psychiatric treatment and remain drug‑ and alcohol‑free during the suspended period.
