U2 star's former PA will have to "change her identity" after €2.8 million theft, appeal court hears
Summary
Carol Hawkins, Adam Clayton's former personal assistant, was convicted of 181 counts of theft from two of his Bank of Ireland accounts between 2004 and 2008, totalling just over €2.8 million. She used the money to buy and maintain 22 thoroughbred racehorses, a €310,000 New York apartment, holidays, her children's education and shopping sprees, and spent €1.4 million on a credit card funded from Clayton's accounts. The Court of Criminal Appeal dismissed her appeal against the conviction, finding sufficient evidence to support the jury's decision and no error that would render the conviction unsafe. The appeal against the severity of the seven‑year prison sentence remains to be decided. Hawkins, aged 51 and originally from North London, is currently detained at Dochas Centre and has been described as a model prisoner, having undertaken courses in art, business studies and an Open University degree in Art History.
