Summary

In the Central Criminal Court, Dr Ivor Hanrahan testified that he prescribed anti‑depressants to Patrick Quirke, a 50‑year‑old farmer, to aid sleep after Quirke complained of stress over an affair with Mary Lowry, who was 52. Quirke, charged with the murder of part‑time DJ Bobby Ryan, was described by the doctor as "upset and quite hurt" about Lowry's relationship with Ryan. Hanrahan explained that he initially offered medication for sleep disturbance, later prescribing Mirtazapine after a counsellor's referral. He noted Quirke's ongoing distress and that Quirke had stopped taking the medication. The doctor also discussed Quirke's admission of an affair with Lowry, which he believed had ended when Lowry began a relationship with another man. The testimony was presented to prosecution counsel Michael Bowman SC. Patrick Quirke pleaded not guilty.
