Jail for homeless man who attacked friend

Summary

Philip Daly, 23, was jailed after he attacked his friend David O'Rourke, who lived with him in a hostel, on 15 December 2017. Daly had repeatedly asked O'Rourke for money, claiming the friend had taken items from his room. He threatened to "kick the shite" out of him if the money was not paid. On the night of the assault, Daly struck O'Rourke with an object, causing a large cut above the eye that required 30 stitches. Daly pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Melanie Greally sentenced him to three‑and‑a‑half years, suspended the last 12 months on condition of offence and victim awareness programmes, and credited him for 10 months already spent in custody. She noted evidence of remorse and efforts to address risk factors.
