Suspended sentence for man who had cannabis for medicinal use

Summary

Derek White, 41, of Lucan, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to unlawful possession of cannabis at his home on 11 July 2016. Garda David Sheehy reported that White was stopped while driving and a small amount of cannabis was found in his car; a search of his house uncovered 16 cannabis plants growing in a tent in an upstairs room, valued at €12,800. White cultivated the plants to extract medicinal oil for himself, who suffers from Crohn's disease, and for his autistic son. He claimed he was not selling the cannabis. Judge Cormac Quinn sentenced White to two years' imprisonment, but suspended the entire sentence on the condition that he keep the peace and be of good behaviour for two years. White has four prior convictions, including possession of drugs, cultivation of cannabis and unlawful possession of ammunition.
