Summary

In the trial for the murder of DJ Bobby Ryan, the accused farmer Patrick Quirke, aged 50, pleaded not guilty. The prosecution alleged Quirke killed Ryan to regain the attention of Ryan's girlfriend, Mary Lowry, with whom Quirke had previously had an affair. Inspector Padraic Powell, the first garda on the scene, noted that Quirke was "extremely clean" despite having worked with slurry that morning, and that Quirke's hands and clothes were clean. Quirke's wife, Imelda, had called the garda on the day the body was found, and Quirke was instructed not to touch anything. Quirke had previously given statements to the garda about his lease on Lowry's land and his relationship with her. The trial is proceeding before Justice Eileen Creedon with a jury of twelve.
