Taxi driver who stole €75k from elderly dementia sufferer is jailed

Summary

Trevor Walsh, a 53‑year‑old taxi driver, was sentenced to two years in prison for stealing €75,000 from the bank account of 83‑year‑old Pamela O'Brien, who suffers from dementia and now resides in a nursing home. Walsh used O'Brien's bank card and forged her signature on documents to open a new account and transfer funds from her old EBS account. He also withdrew cash up to €500 and paid utility bills using her card. The thefts, uncovered after friends reviewed her statements, spanned 21 months and included five admitted counts out of 21 charges. Walsh admitted the thefts, cited a drinking problem, and offered €4,000 to the victim. Judge Pauline Codd noted the breach of trust and the vulnerability of the victim, suspended the last year of a three‑year term on the condition that Walsh attend alcohol‑addiction programmes under the Probation Service.
