Summary

Barry Grogan, a 38‑year‑old truck driver from Kilbarrack, pleaded guilty to careless driving that caused the death of Martina Loughlin on the M50 near Lucan on 11 November 2015. The court found that Loughlin's car had broken down and was stopped on the motorway, and that Grogan's Volvo lorry struck her vehicle, sending it 60 metres forward. A second vehicle collided with Loughlin's car seven seconds later. Loughlin was pronounced dead on 14 November 2015. Grogan was sentenced to one year's imprisonment, the whole term suspended for one year on the condition that he keep the peace and behave well. He was also disqualified from driving for four years, effective 18 March. The judge noted Grogan's guilty plea, cooperation, voluntary statement, lack of prior convictions, good employment record and remorse. No other charges were brought against Grogan.
