Thrown fork got stuck in synagogue security guard's head during attack

Summary

In a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court hearing on 21 December 2018, a 29‑year‑old Latvian national, Olgerts Romanovs, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm outside a synagogue on Rathfarnham Road, Terenure, Dublin, on 1 September 2018. Romanovs, who had no fixed abode and was living in a tent in St Stephen's Green, had cycled down the footpath and spat at a security guard. After the guard challenged him verbally, Romanovs threw his bike, approached the guard aggressively, spat in his face, threatened to kill him with a spanner, and then pulled a silver kitchen fork from his bag and hurled it at the guard. The fork lodged in the side of the guard's head, causing a deep wound that required stitches. Garda Brian Greally later arrested Romanovs after witnesses were interviewed. The judge, Cormac Quinn, sentenced Romanovs to fourteen months' imprisonment, backdating the term to the day he first entered custody in September 2018.
