Summary

Alan Ellis, 26, of Rathmines, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to threatening to kill or seriously harm a prison officer and to producing a blade during a dispute at Mountjoy Prison on 28 June 2016. He attempted to slice the officer's wrist with a blade moulded into a toothbrush handle while the officer was handing him toilet paper. Ellis claimed he had decided to "get" the officer because he was disrespectful and intended to slice his wrist, but later expressed guilt. He has 35 prior convictions, including assault on a peace officer, false imprisonment, burglary, theft, trespass and possession of knives. Judge Patricia Ryan sentenced him to four years' imprisonment, suspending the final year on the condition that he keep the peace and be of good behaviour for three years after release. The sentence was back‑dated to 21 July 2017, the date he entered custody for this matter.
