Summary

The trial of 24‑year‑old Michael Jones, a professional roofer, is hearing allegations that he was driving an Audi A3 at more than double the speed limit when it collided with a Mitsubishi Colt driven by Hong Qing Qu. The fatal collision occurred at about 1 a.m. on 17 November 2015 near Blanchardstown shopping centre, on a slip road where the speed limit is 60 km/h. Garda Patrick McIlroy presented evidence that the Audi was travelling between 115 km/h and 137 km/h before impact, based on the angle of collision and damage patterns. He noted that the front of the Audi struck the side of the Colt, with the Audi's front heavily damaged while the rest of the car remained relatively intact. Garda Alex McDermott‑Roe reported that Jones confirmed ownership of the Audi but denied driving it at the time. The case is proceeding before Judge Patricia Ryan and a jury. Michael Jones pleaded not guilty.
