Bank worker who stole 100K spared jail

Summary

Conor Egan, a 27‑year‑old bank worker from Kilmacredock, Maynooth, stole €100,000 from an AIB branch in Leixlip between January and November 2010. He moved the money to a Bank of Ireland account, then transferred it to various online bookmakers and used it to gamble. Egan admitted the thefts, which were premeditated and involved a breach of trust, and confessed to falsifying documents to conceal the thefts. He was caught when a colleague noticed missing cash during a day's leave. Egan's father, a retired Colonel, agreed to repay the bank in full using his retirement package, and Egan pledged to repay his father. Judge Patricia Ryan, noting Egan's good character and efforts to repay, imposed a four‑year sentence suspended in full for four years. The court recorded that Egan had no impact on customer accounts and that he had not spent the money on a lavish lifestyle. Conor Egan pleaded guilty.
