10 years for man who helped criminals murder Noel "Duck Egg" Kirwan
Summary
Jason Keating, 27, was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment by the Special Criminal Court for facilitating a criminal organisation in the execution‑style murder of Noel "Duck Egg" Kirwan, 62, who was shot six times in his Ford Mondeo on 22 December 2016. Keating admitted in October 2018 to participating in or contributing to the commission of the murder, a serious offence under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006, and pleaded guilty to facilitating a criminal organisation in committing murder. The court entered a nolle prosequi on the original murder charge. Keating's role included monitoring a tracking device (Gotek7) placed on Kirwan's car, providing the information to the gunman, and transporting the gunman to and from the scene. He was sentenced to ten years, back‑dated to 2 May 2017, after a mitigating discount of three and a half years for his guilty plea and other factors.

Outcome: Prosecution counsel Paul Greene SC said at Keating's sentence hearing last month that the activities by the criminal organisation could be traced back to early November 2016 but the defendant's individual contribution began on December 20 that year. Sentencing the defendant today, Mr Justice Hunt, presiding, sitting with Judge Sinead Ni Chualachain and Judge Cormac Dunne, sentenced Keating to ten years imprisonment, backdated to May 2, 2017 when he went into custody.
