A 60‑year‑old Limerick man, Desmond Coyle, is on trial at the Central Criminal Court for the murder of 58‑year‑old Romanian Calo Carpaci, who was found dead at Roche's Row on 24 May 2017. Coyle pleaded not guilty. During the hearing, he told Gardaí that he had gone to Carpaci's house with a knife to stop him from demanding money and making "smart‑alecky" comments. He claimed he did not remember bringing the knife or the exact day, but that he had the knife in his hand and that Carpaci had fallen and was bleeding. He said that if he had not gone there with the knife, Carpaci would still be alive. The prosecution's detective, David Baynham, had interviewed Coyle after the incident. Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis testified that Carpaci died from a single stab wound that penetrated his chest and heart. The trial was scheduled to continue the following morning.
