Man (60) goes on trial accused of murder
Summary
A 60‑year‑old man, Desmond Coyle of Davis Street, Limerick, has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court for the murder of 58‑year‑old Calo Carpaci at Roches Row on 24 May 2017. Coyle pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor Anthony Sammon SC said the case will hinge on CCTV footage showing Coyle leaving his flat, the route he took to Roches Row, and a brief entry into Carpaci's residence. Sammon argued that Coyle was under the influence of alcohol, a factor he claimed would not negate intent. Witness statements, evidence of Coyle's arrest, detention and Garda interviews will be presented. Defence counsel Mark Nicholas SC will make admissions under section 22 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, which may shorten the trial. The hearing is before Justice Michael White and a 12‑person jury and is expected to last two weeks.
