Woman initially blamed herself after attack by serial sex offender Nevin
Summary
Patrick Nevin, 37, was convicted in December 2014 of sexually assaulting a Brazilian student he met on Tinder. The student, who was using the app to practice English, believed they were meeting for coffee but was taken to a secluded field on the UCD campus where Nevin forced a kiss, pulled her dress down, restrained her, and punched her on the back of the head. She escaped by releasing her seat belt and getting out of the car. Nevin drove off, leaving her distressed and disoriented. Gardaí identified him via the car's number‑plate recognition system. The victim, now 36, testified that she feared for her life and that the attack forced her to abandon her English studies and work as a cleaner. She expressed ongoing fear of men and a desire to return to Ireland, while acknowledging that most people are good. Nevin's lawyers denied the charge and the case was sent to sentencing.
