Kenneth O'Brien murder accused told gardai they'd "better go to Australia" to find out what happened

Summary

Paul Well Snr, a 50‑year‑old father of five from Barnamore Park, Finglas, has admitted shooting and dismembering 33‑year‑old Kenneth O'Brien at his home on 15 or 16 January 2016. He pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court. In his first Garda interviews he denied any involvement and could not explain why O'Brien had transferred more than €50,000 into his account. Well claimed that O'Brien had wanted him to murder O'Brien's partner so he could take their child back to Australia, where he had previously lived. Garda Sergeant Martin Long noted that Well had been receiving €320 a week in Jobseeker's Benefit and that the €14,500 he withdrew in January was not in his possession. He also acknowledged that €52,925 had been transferred into his account over 18 months. The trial continues this afternoon.
