Summary
Paul Well Sr, a 50‑year‑old former butcher, was arrested for shooting and dismembering his friend Kenneth O'Brien, a 33‑year‑old truck driver. Well told Gardaí he had not seen O'Brien for several days before the victim went missing. He was charged with murder at O'Brien's home in Barnamore Park on 15 or 16 January 2016. Well pleaded not guilty, claiming O'Brien had wanted him to murder O'Brien's partner so he could take their child to Australia. Garda Declan O'Brien testified that Well had met O'Brien in 2007 and that O'Brien had been involved in an affair. O'Brien's partner had been betrayed, and O'Brien was described as reckless and devious. Well said he had worked as a butcher about 30 years earlier, leaving after cutting his finger. The trial is being heard in the Central Criminal Court.
