Perfume thief apologised while committing offences, court hears
Summary
Craig Bergin, aged 32, pleaded guilty to theft offences at Boots and Holland & Barrett on Grafton Street in 2015, stealing about €6,883 worth of perfume, cosmetics, health supplements and aftershave. He was captured on CCTV, did not disguise himself, and apologized to staff while committing the thefts. Garda Bernard Maguire reported that the stolen items were taken on six occasions between 7 October and 17 November 2015. Bergin admitted having alcohol and gambling debts and mental health issues, including anxiety, and was described as respectful to Gardaí. Judge Elma Sheahan sentenced him to two and a half years imprisonment, suspended for the same period on conditions of good behaviour, engagement with probation and psychiatric services, and keeping the peace. The sentence was imposed after confirming he had secured stable accommodation following a period of homelessness.
