Man tried to secure mortgage using false documents
Summary
Patrick Sherry, 32, of Ventry Park, Cabra, Dublin, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to attempting to secure a mortgage of €171,000 by submitting a false mortgage application between 8 June and 8 August 2015. He also faced charges for possessing and using false documents to support the application. Gardaí were alerted to the fraud in March 2016 after Sherry had applied for a mortgage the previous June. The documents he submitted, including bank statements, financial accounts and Revenue notices of assessment, were found to be bogus. The bank statements claimed a balance of €10,623 when his actual balance was €195; his 2013 accounts overstated earnings by €35,000 and his 2014 accounts by €33,000. Revenue officials were also contacted and the tax documentation was found false. Sherry was arrested at his home in July 2015 but exercised his right to silence during the interview.
