Mother directed son to smash-up girlfriend's family home, court hears

Summary

In a 2015 burglary and criminal damage case at the Halligan household in Coolock, Dublin, 23‑year‑old Josh Byrne, assisted by two other men, used baseball bats to smash windows, a front door and various household items. The assault was carried out under the direction of Byrne's mother, Alice Byrne, who had a telephone argument with the mother of Byrne's girlfriend, Rebecca Halligan. Byrne's mother opened the house to the men, who wore balaclavas and demanded to see Dean Halligan, who was not present. Byrne had prior convictions for traffic offences and obstruction, the latter ending in July. He was sentenced to two and a half years' imprisonment, suspended on condition of engaging with the Probation Service, and a €2,000 compensation was offered to the victims. The mother's sentencing was adjourned pending a probation report. Josh Byrne was found guilty.
