Romanian ATM scammer is jailed
Summary
Costel Tudor, a 44‑year‑old Romanian, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for his role in a bank‑machine scam that targeted elderly victims in Dublin. Tudor recruited two women to distract ATM users after they entered their PINs. One woman tapped the victim's shoulder, claiming a €20 drop, while the other, who had seen the PIN, swapped the victim's card for a different one. Tudor then used the swapped card to withdraw cash. The scheme took place at the Bank of Ireland in Stillorgan Shopping Centre on 27 April 2015 and at Permanent TSB on Main Street, Dundrum on 7 November 2015. Garda Stephen Dunican noted Tudor's extensive criminal record, including convictions in the Netherlands, Finland, England and Germany. Judge Melanie Greally, citing the women's instrumental role and the CCTV evidence, imposed the sentence and suspended the final 18 months of a 10‑year ban on returning to Ireland.
