Summary

Robert Day, 47, of Cabra, Dublin, was convicted on 1 June 2023 of membership of an unlawful organisation, the Irish Republican Army (IRA). He had previously been convicted in 2016 for possession of €20,000 in forged €50 bank notes, a charge for which he was on bail when the membership offence occurred. At a Special Criminal Court hearing, Detective Sergeant Padraig Boyce described how National Surveillance Unit listening devices monitored a group of men suspected of IRA involvement, including a house takeover in Castleknock on 7 August 2015. Day was questioned on 8 August about a February 2014 operation to buy counterfeit cash. He denied IRA membership and knowledge of the operation, repeating "no comment." The court noted the maximum sentence is eight years and remanded Day in custody until 25 June, when sentencing will take place.
