Garda chief believes three accused are IRA members
Summary
In a Special Criminal Court hearing on 8 June 2018, Detective Chief Superintendent Anthony Howard testified that he believes three men—David Nooney (53), Seán Hannaway (48), and Edward O'Brien (42)—are members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The men are charged with membership of an unlawful organisation. Two other defendants, Kevin Hannaway (69) and Eva Shannon (60), are pleading not guilty to assisting the IRA by interviewing persons involved in IRA‑related criminal activities on 7 and 8 August 2015 at Riverwood Park, Castleknock. Howard explained that he had reviewed Garda material on the three men and was satisfied that they were members of the IRA at that time. He stated he would claim privilege over the material, citing protection of life and state security, and would hand it over only if directed by the court. The trial is presided over by Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy with Judges Gerard Griffin and Gerard Haughton.
