Senior garda denies main witness in Roma teen murder investigation received preferential treatment

During the trial of Alan Wilson, charged with the 2008 murder of 18‑year‑old Romanian teenager Maria Rostas, Detective Superintendent JJ Keane denied that the State's main witness, Fergus O'Hanlon, received preferential treatment or immunity in exchange for his statement. Keane testified that O'Hanlon had not been offered any deals and that no immunity was mentioned at any stage. He also confirmed that O'Hanlon had received a suspended sentence for earlier District Court offences after a superintendent informed the judge of his assistance in the murder investigation. Keane's cross‑examination was conducted by Michael O'Higgins SC, and the trial proceeded before Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy with a jury of ten men and two women. The case remains at the trial stage. Alan Wilson pleaded not guilty.
