Detective recognised IRA accused's voice on recording of alleged "dissident interviews"

In a Special Criminal Court hearing, a detective confirmed that the voice on an audio recording of alleged dissident interviews belonged to Robert Day, a 55‑year‑old from Cabra, Dublin 7, who is charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styled as the Irish Republican Army. The court had previously heard that Gardaí had planted a bug in a private house to record conversations among alleged IRA members. Mr Justice Robert Eagar ruled that the evidence identifying Day's voice, which the defence had objected to, was admissible. Detective Sergeant Padraig Boyce, of the Special Detective Unit, testified that on 8 August 2015 he had seen Day arriving at and leaving the house in Castleknock, and that photographs in court showed him outside the house. Boyce, who has known Day for over 13 years, listened to the recording and recognised Day as the last man interviewed on that day, stating he was 100% certain.
