Dublin man charged with IRA membership at special court sitting
Summary
A 34‑year‑old Dublin man, Michael Barr of Premier Square, Finglas, was charged with membership of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court on 18 July 2014. Detective Sergeant Pádraig Boyce, of the Special Detective Unit, testified that he had arrested Barr on Saturday evening at Lucan Garda Station. When the charge was read to him, Barr denied being a member of the IRA or any other illegal organisation. He was identified for the three‑judge court. Under cross‑examination by Siobhán Ní Chúlacháin BL, Barr confirmed that he had been arrested earlier that Friday morning in the presence of several Gardaí and released shortly before the re‑arrest. Solicitor for the State, Deirdre Byrne, confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed the charge. Mr Justice Paul Butler, with Judges John O'Hagan and William Hamill, agreed to hear the case.
