Summary

In a trial at the Central Criminal Court, a 41‑year‑old woman accused her older brother of repeatedly raping her between 1983 and 1988. She told the jury that she confronted him after the abuse stopped, writing a letter in 1995 that she later delivered to him in the family home. In the letter she declared she would never forgive him, that he had taken her virginity, robbed her of education and almost destroyed her. He did not respond to the letter. She said she had told him she would see him in court one day, and that was the last thing she said to him. She had reported the abuse to Gardaí in 2010 and again in 2015, but felt the police were unhelpful. The trial is ongoing before Ms Justice Eileen Creedon and a jury. The unnamed woman pleaded not guilty.
