Two brothers found guilty of raping sisters
Summary
Two Meath brothers, both in their late 40s, were convicted of raping their sisters in the 1980s and 1990s. The first brother was found guilty in January of four counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault, with the abuse occurring when the victim was aged 14 to 20. At sentencing on 20 March, Justice Deirdre Murphy imposed a 10‑year term, suspending the last two and a half years, noting the offender's juvenile status at the time of most offences but continued adult offending. The second brother, convicted in a separate trial, faced two counts of indecent assault and one count of rape between 1987 and 1988; his case was scheduled for a hearing on 19 April. Both men remain unnamed to protect victim anonymity. The victim described the abuse as escalating from touching to rape, occurring in various family locations, and expressed that her brother's actions ruined her teenage years. The defendants maintain their innocence.

Sentencing the man last Tuesday, March 20, Ms Justice Deirdre Murphy said the effect of the abuse on the victim had been "devastating". "He failed to heed her pleas that he stop, that he go away, that he leave her alone – her reminders to him that brothers shouldn't do to sisters what he was doing to her," Ms Justice Murphy said. "Instead, he continued to abuse and rape her." She handed down a 10-year sentence but suspended the last two and a half years, noting the man was a juvenile for much of his offending.
