Summary

Martin Keenan, aged 20, pleaded not guilty to the murder of Wesley Mooney, aged 33, at St Joseph's Park, Dunsink Lane, north Dublin, on 5 June 2016. He claimed that on arriving home at about 11.45 pm he found a 'junkie' in his bedroom, who attacked him. Keenan said he struck the man with a garden shears tool, hitting him twice, after which the man fell. He later showed the Gardaí the shears he used. The jury heard that Mooney suffered two stab wounds and a broken shin. Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis reported a deep stab wound below the left armpit that pierced both lungs and major vessels, a second wound below the left knee, and a spiral fracture of the left shin. He found modest alcohol and drugs in Mooney's blood and urine, and identified the chest stab as the main cause of death.
