Burglar (22) who leads "an abject life" broke into home of elderly sisters

Summary

In February 2018 the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court extended the prison term of 22‑year‑old Eric Harcourt by one year for a burglary at the home of two elderly sisters aged 78 and 80 in Ballybough on 22 October 2015. Harcourt, who had been in custody since age 13 and had previously been sentenced to six months for violent disorder in December 2015, pleaded guilty to the burglary. He had been out on High Court bail for two and a half weeks when he broke into the sisters' house, broke a lock, and removed items from a cupboard. Garda Mark Deasy described the break‑in as "random" and noted Harcourt had not known the occupants' ages. The sisters declined to give a victim impact statement.
