In a robbery at Old Bawn Shopping Centre on 14 April 2017, 24‑year‑old Daragh Brown entered a Centra shop armed with a knife and demanded money from the tills. After failing to obtain cash, he fled with a quantity of John Player Blue cigarettes. Two bread delivery men, Will Murray and Joe Daniel, chased him. While running into the car park, Brown's trousers fell, revealing his colourful boxer shorts. He threatened the men, saying he would stab them if they approached, and warned of "ten lads" waiting in a nearby estate. The men stopped following him. Gardaí, alerted by witnesses, described Brown and arrested him at Allenton Avenue. Two cigarette packets and a knife were recovered from his person and the car park. Brown pleaded guilty to robbery and making threats to kill, and will be sentenced in July. He has 29 prior convictions and has been diagnosed with depression. The judge deferred sentencing until 31 July.
