Seven-year sentence for man who took part in violent raid that left shopkeeper in coma

Daryl McKeon, 23, was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for his role in a violent raid on a newsagent in Finglas. He pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and assault causing serious harm to shopkeeper Kevin Tansey on March 18 last year. The court heard that McKeon and an accomplice, whose identity remains under investigation, entered the shop with covered faces. While McKeon blocked the door and restrained the victim, the other man struck Tansey three times on the head with a hammer. The attack left Tansey with extensive skull fractures, bleeding on the brain, and a comatose state. Judge Melanie Greally imposed an eight-and-a-half year sentence, with the final 18 months suspended. The jail term was backdated to March 2017, when McKeon entered custody. The judge noted that while McKeon did not wield the hammer, he participated wholeheartedly in the robbery. McKeon has 12 previous convictions and was on bail for district court offences at the time of the incident. The other raider is still under investigation.
