Jail for "courier" caught with loaded gun on passenger train
Summary
Ciaran Ryan, 24, of Summerhill, Dublin, was sentenced by the Special Criminal Court to three years in prison, with four months suspended, for unlawful possession of a CZ model 70 semi‑automatic pistol and two rounds of 7.65 Browning ammunition. The gun and ammunition were recovered by Gardaí at Connolly Station on 19 July last year. Ryan had pleaded guilty in December to the offence. He was acting as a "courier" for the weapon, and there was no evidence he intended to use it. On the day in question, a surveillance operation had been in place around Connolly station. Ryan entered the station at 3:05 pm, bought a ticket, met a woman who handed him a white bag, and boarded the Belfast train at 3:30 pm. Gardaí followed him onto the train, arrested him, and found the gun in a shoebox inside the bag.
