Gardai caught robber in process of burning €2.2k in cash

Summary

In July 2016, Derek Cooling, aged 29, and another man robbed the 'More For Less' shop in Bawnogue Shopping Centre, Dublin 22. They used an air gun to threaten a female employee, demanding the till be opened. Cooling pleaded guilty to robbery. During the robbery, the cashier handed over €2,200 in cash, and the men forced the shop manager to empty the safe. After the robbery, the men entered a nearby house and were found burning the €2,200 and clothing. Gardaí discovered a bloody trail and smoke from the house's chimney. Cooling was sentenced to five years, with the final two and a half years suspended under conditions including rehabilitation. The cashier could not return to work, and the manager suffered anxiety and paranoia. Cooling's father presented a letter to the court, and the judge agreed he would need supervision upon release.
