Jail for Greek man who caused pile-up after drunken car chase

Summary

Kosmas Ompante, 29, was jailed for three and a half years after a drunken chase in a stolen Mercedes led to a multi‑vehicle collision at Cappagh Road, Finglas, on 3 August 2017. He admitted taking a litre of vodka, tablets, driving under the influence, without a licence or insurance, and causing three counts of criminal damage. Ompante had 17 prior convictions in the UK and one in Greece. The judge noted he was well over the drink‑driving limit and drove recklessly, endangering others. He was also disqualified from driving for six years. The incident caused injuries to the driver and passenger of the car he crashed into, including chipped teeth, a fractured shin and soft‑tissue injuries. Ompante expressed remorse and said he hoped he had not killed anyone. The case was prosecuted by Diarmuid Collins BL and defended by Luigi Rea BL. Kosmas Ompante pleaded guilty.
