Porsche and BMW went up in flames after homeless man set bin alight to keep warm
Summary
In December 2017, a former Dublin homeless man, Dwayne Barry, aged 29, was found guilty of arson at two Ballsbridge locations. Barry had set wheelie bins on fire to warm his sleeping bag, and when the fires spread he attempted to extinguish them. He pleaded guilty to arson at Ardoyne House, Pembrook Park, Ballsbridge on 25 January 2016, causing €45,000 damage to a Porsche and BMW in a double garage, and to arson at Burlington House, Waterloo Lane, Ballsbridge on 28 February 2016, causing structural damage of over €18,000. Barry has 86 prior convictions. Garda Martin Folan, after reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing Barry, noted Barry's cooperation and efforts to improve his life, including addressing alcohol use and planning to take his Leaving Cert. Judge Karen O'Connor postponed sentencing to March and ordered a probation report. The case remains pending sentencing.
