Murder accused told gardai he stabbed father of one three times

Summary

During the third day of the 25‑year‑old Andrew Gibney's trial, the jury heard that he admitted to stabbing Gerard Burnett, 28, three times in the side with a knife. Gibney had come to Blanchardstown Garda Station of his own free will, telling officers he was involved in the incident and that the man was dead and needed peace. Sergeant Patrick Traynor reported that Gibney had a knife on the night of the incident and used it on Burnett. Chief State Pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy testified that Burnett's body had 30 knife injuries, six of which were deep stab wounds to the right side of the chest, causing internal injuries to the lung, heart and liver. Gibney was arrested for assault causing serious harm. The trial continues before Mr Justice Paul Butler and a jury of five men and seven women. Andrew Gibney pleaded not guilty.
