Murder trial hears evidence from Chief State Pathologist

Summary

In the Central Criminal Court, Andrew Gibney (25) pleaded not guilty to the murder of Gerard Burnett (28) on 21 August 2012. Chief State Pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy testified that Burnett's body, found in his porch, suffered 30 knife injuries, including six deep, fatal stab wounds to the right side of his chest that penetrated the lung, heart and liver. She noted ten shallow wounds on his back, multiple abrasions from broken glass on his face, and injuries to his right hand suggesting a defensive struggle. Cassidy suggested the wounds were inflicted by a broad‑bladed knife with a single edge, possibly by more than one assailant, and that death was not immediate. Witnesses Anne‑Marie Corbett and her husband described hearing a commotion and seeing three men running toward the main road that night. The trial, presided over by Mr Justice Paul Butler, is scheduled to continue for up to three weeks.
