10-year sentence for drugs offender involved in €250k cocaine handover
Summary
In Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Jason Kearney, 37, was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for possession for sale or supply of drugs over €13,000. Kearney, described as a "drugs courier", was involved in the handover of nearly €250,000 worth of cocaine. Garda surveillance of co‑accused Trevor Brunton, 35, led to the interception of both men's vehicles on 28 July 2016. Eight blocks of cocaine, weighing just over three kilos and wrapped in silver duct tape, were seized. The drugs had an estimated street value of €245,000. Kearney pleaded guilty to the offence; Brunton pleaded guilty on a later court date and will be sentenced in January. Kearney's sentence follows a 2008 conviction that carried seven years with four suspended, and the law mandates a ten‑year term for a second conviction of this nature. The judge agreed to review the sentence after six years.
