Summary
During a trial in October 2017, 85‑year‑old retired surgeon Michael Shine was accused of indecently assaulting patients at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and his private clinic in Drogheda between 1964 and 1991. On the fourth day of the hearing, a fifth complainant, who was about 15 in 1990, recounted an incident at Shine's fracture clinic. He said Shine had called him in, removed his trousers, and examined his right ankle while moving his hand up to his groin, groping his testicles and penis. The complainant shouted that Shine was "a dirty bastard" after the examination. Shine's defence noted the absence of hospital records for the complainant's 1990 visit, citing only an 1988 x‑ray. The case remains before Judge Cormac Quinn and a jury, with the trial expected to continue for two weeks.
