Main cause of death was heart disease, unlawful killing trial hears

Summary

The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Patrick Kelly's death was mainly caused by severe heart disease, with an enlarged heart and narrowed vessels, while acute alcohol intoxication and minor trauma were contributory. Prof. Marie Cassidy noted Kelly's blood alcohol level was 213 mg/100 ml, a toxic range, and that his liver showed cirrhosis from chronic drinking. Minor injuries included a 5 cm forehead laceration, a skull bruise, an incomplete cervical spine fracture and rib fractures likely from resuscitation attempts. The court heard that the altercation over noise and late‑night drinking led to a fight in which Paul Gill punched Kelly and later kicked him, and that Gill also assaulted Martin Curtis. Gill denied intent to kill but admitted assault, and the trial will resume next Tuesday before Judge Melanie Greally and a jury. Paul Gill pleaded guilty.
