Jail for man who claimed dead mother's pension for 17 years

Summary

Brian Bobey, 64, was sentenced to 18 months in jail at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for fraudulently claiming his late mother's pension for 17 years, from 1997 to 2013. He admitted stealing €158,726 from the State. Judge Patricia Ryan rejected a repayment plan of €50 a week, noting it would take over 63 years to repay. The court considered the long period of fraud serious enough for custodial punishment but excused repayment due to Bobey's medical conditions, including blindness in one eye from a tumour and osteoporosis, and his remorse. Bobey has 15 prior convictions, the latest in 2002 for drink driving. He remains living at his parents' former home in Walkinstown Parade with his partner and daughter, receiving €195 a week in social welfare and paying €35 a week in rent.
