No jail for man who threatened to kill hotel staff after cannabis find

Summary

Keith Byrne, 32, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of €300 worth of cannabis herb and making threats to kill or seriously harm staff at Bewleys Hotel, Sandyford, on 15 February 2014. Byrne, who had 44 prior convictions, threatened staff, saying he had a barrister on speed dial and would slit a staff member "from ear to ear." He also threatened to stab a staff member with a screwdriver after the staff member had the bag of cannabis. Byrne had completed a residential rehabilitation programme and a favourable probation report was presented. Judge Melanie Greally, noting the violent conduct but also the rehabilitation, imposed a two‑year sentence suspended for two years on strict conditions, deciding that incarceration would be counter‑productive at this stage.
