Summary
Justin Murray, 38, was found guilty of stealing €500 in mass donations from the Church of Our Lady of Victories in Ballymun on 6 November 2016. He entered the church by "creeping" in, was seen by a parishioner taking collection envelopes, and fled on foot when she noticed him. Garda Ross Brierley and colleagues identified him from CCTV footage and arrested him the following day at a shopping centre. Murray, who has 77 prior convictions including ten thefts and 20 burglaries, had previously been on bail for a robbery. He pleaded guilty early, a fact the prosecution said was of great assistance. The court remanded him in custody, ordered a probation report, and noted his wish to be transferred to Cork Prison under an enhanced regime to aid his recovery from heroin use. The case was heard at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
