Jury begins deliberating in trial of garda accused of harassing solicitor
Summary
The jury in the trial of Sergeant Eve Doherty, a 49‑year‑old Garda detective, will resume deliberations after a brief recess. Doherty is accused of harassing State solicitor Elizabeth Howlin between September 2011 and March 2013 by sending letters and emails that called Howlin a "corrupt bitch" and an "incompetent useless hobbit," and by placing A4 posters around Howlin's housing estate that falsely claimed Howlin was a political appointee who would "pull" files to protect people connected to her or the Government. Howlin, who worked with the Director of Public Prosecutions and is a distant cousin of TD Brendan Howlin, denies the allegations. Judge Melanie Greally instructed the jury to base any verdict solely on the evidence presented in court, warning against external research or discussion.
