Vulnerable man was "well oiled" when pressurised into storing rifle at flat

Summary

Bryan Quigley, 44, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of an Anschutz rifle found in his flat on 29 November 2016. Garda David Chapman reported that a search of Quigley's former home recovered the disassembled rifle and 11 rounds of ammunition. The rifle, stolen in a burglary, was in usable condition but had its telescopic sight installed backwards. Quigley claimed he had no involvement in the burglary and had been drinking when a man, whom he would not name, brought the weapon to his home and asked him to leave it there. Quigley said he feared the man and felt forced to agree. He was homeless after a fire at his flat and had difficulties with alcohol and depression. The court found Quigley a vulnerable person who had been taken advantage of. Judge Nolan, noting Quigley's guilty plea, cooperation and lack of benefit from the offence, imposed a four‑year sentence, which he suspended in full.
