Jail for burglar who stole designer perfumes worth €3,000

Summary

Patrick Stokes, 36, of Hill Street, Dublin, was convicted of burglary and criminal damage at a Boots chemist on Drimnagh Road on 14 January 2017. He admitted that a silver Honda Civic had been reversed into the front doors twice, smashing the door and setting the shop ablaze. CCTV showed Stokes and an accomplice loading Dior, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana perfumes and aftershave into a wheelie bin. The stolen goods were valued at €3,183 and the door damage at €6,969. Stokes, who has 50 previous convictions including five for burglary and nine for theft, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Pauline Codd sentenced him to three and a half years, suspending the final 18 months on strict conditions, including Probation Supervision to begin before his release. The case highlighted Stokes' mild intellectual disability and his history of drug addiction, which his defence argued made him vulnerable.
