Community service likely for Lithuanian man caught with "card trapping" equipment

Summary

A 40‑year‑old Lithuanian man, Vytautas Tarasevicius, was found in possession of "card trapping" equipment and images of ATM machines on his iPhone, which Gardaí believed were intended for use in ATM thefts. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the equipment with the intention of using it in a theft that occurred in Howth on 1 March 2016. Tarasevicius has seven prior convictions. The judge, Karen O'Connor, noted his voluntary community work and a medical report of health difficulties, and decided to impose 240 hours of community service in lieu of an 18‑month prison sentence, to be completed within one year. The case was adjourned to October to assess his suitability for community service before the order is affirmed. The court also heard that a co‑accused, Deividas Sevcenko, had received a similar sentence for his role in the same incident.
