Attackers unwittingly stole necklaces worth €22k

Summary

Two men, Jordan Carthy (22) and Shane Walsh (18), pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and robbery of two necklaces worth €22,000 at Dame Lane, Dublin 2 on 9 September 2016. The victim, Richard Bergin, was attacked by three men after a night out and had his bag stolen. The bag contained the necklaces, which he had borrowed for his aunt from a jewellery shop where he worked. Garda Frank Johnson identified the accused on CCTV footage, noting that the men repeatedly kicked Bergin while he was on the ground and that Carthy performed a taunting dance. Walsh took the bag and was later arrested in Stephen's Green, where he was found wearing one of the necklaces and a jacket belonging to Carthy. Both men were intoxicated at the time of the assault and claimed they did not remember the incident. They were out on bail when the incident occurred.
